Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What do I need to wear to my first lesson?
A. For your first lesson you will need to wear some loose fitted clothing, a baggy t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms will do fine. Don't worry about footwear as you will train in bare feet. After your first lesson you will have the opportunity to purchase a Gi (Karate suit).
Q. What can I expect at my first lesson?
A. Anyone who steps onto the dojo floor for the first time will be a little nervous, we understand, as we were all once there ourselves! The first part of the lesson is the warm-up where we get the blood flowing and stretch all the muscles of the body. Next you will probably do some Kihon (basic techniques) and Kata (forms). Try to follow the others as best you can, it will start to become easier the more you train.
Q. How much does it all cost?
A. Your first lesson is free! If you wish to continue training a cost of £5 per lesson is required. You will also need to get a JKA license which costs about £20 and is renewable every year, this allows you to grade, attend national courses and tournaments and provides you with personal injury insurance. Grading days cost roughly about £15 and come around once every 3 - 6 months.
Q. Will I get hurt?
A. As with all sport there is an element of risk. Karate is a form of self-defence and we frequently practice partner work and sparring. However all contact is controlled and kept to a minimum.
Q. How long does it take to get a black belt?
A. There is no exact timescale, it depends entirely on the individual. Hardwork, dedication and commitment are key ingredients to attaining a black belt. Anything less will see you progress at a much slower pace.
